The suitability of honey was monitored by the Georgian Rural Council in Lanchkhuti with the support of the Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG), within the framework of the fourth phase (ENPARD IV) of the European Union's "European Neighborhood Program for Agriculture and Rural Development" (ENPARD - Georgia), as well as the "Bread of the World" organization (Germany) within the framework of the project "Increased Agricultural Practices and Consumer Awareness".
According to the legislation of Georgia, hundreds of pharmacologically active substances are regulated, including antibiotics. The content of chloramphenicol and some of the drugs included in the group of nitroimidazoles is prohibited in food, while the rest are not regulated at all and are checked according to the norms in the European Union.
Researches were conducted in the State Laboratory of Agriculture.
A total of 4 samples were tested, 2 - unlabeled and 2 - labeled. 2 samples were tested for chloramphenicol content, as well as 2 samples for nitroimidazole group drugs.
Antibiotic content was not found in any of the samples.
Antibiotics are therapeutic agents, however, they have various contraindications and can cause various health complications. In addition, as a result of the systematic use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs, the human body gets used to them. In critical situations, when they are necessary to treat diseases and even save lives, these drugs no longer bring results. This phenomenon is called antimicrobial resistance.
Antibiotics are used not only for humans, but also for the treatment and prevention of diseases in animals and bees. Residues of these substances pass into honey, eggs, milk or meat. As a result of consumption of such food, these substances are already taken by humans.

It is gratifying that no antibiotics were found in the samples tested by our partner organizations. It should be noted here that tests were not conducted on all possible contaminants of honey.
Inspections are carried out within the framework of the fourth phase (ENPARD IV) of the European Union "European Neighborhood Program for Agriculture and Rural Development" (ENPARD - Georgia), as well as within the framework of the project "Increased agricultural practices and consumer awareness" funded by the organization "Bread of the World" (Germany) . The project is implemented by a coalition, which includes the Association of Farmers of Georgia (the lead partner), the Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia, and the Association of Farmers and Beekeepers of the Ambrolauri district of the mountainous regions of Georgia.
